The so-called law of attraction has become one of the biggest sacred cows of the New Age movement. But it is based on a wonderful truth, so it’s time we tear down the statue of stone it has become and rediscover what it is really about.
The first thing we need to understand is that the law of attraction does not exist. That’s right, the law of attraction does not exist. Oh, I can already hear the howls of protest and the screams of “heresy” among my New Age friends! But hear me out, for what we’re going to discuss can make you a much more effective creator.
Think about it for a moment: If you are a creator, which is what the so-called law of attraction is all about, how can any law apply to you? If you are truly a creator you can create whatever reality you want, including one without a law of attraction, and so it is ultimately not a law at all.
Another problem with the so-called law of attraction is that it implies that there’s something outside of you that needs to be attracted, whereas at the purest level, a real creator simply imagines and it appears. A real creator (and you are a real creator) is whole and complete, and everything ultimately comes from within, instead of from outside of one’s self.
That being said however, within this shared creation of life on Earth we have included some conveniences such as gravity, attraction, and many other “laws.” These agreements all serve to make this shared experience possible, by slowing everything down and creating some semblance of order and shared reality.
Can you imagine what would happen if every little thought that flitted through your mind instantly became reality? Your reality would change so fast that it would quickly become extremely confusing, and there would be no space to experience what it is like to be a conscious creator or to relate with another being.
Like the agreement of gravity, the agreement of attraction is in fact one of the ways that we manifest things into our own 3-D experience here on Earth. But it is entirely your choice whether to participate in that agreement or not, and understanding that is the key to reclaiming your own conscious creatorship. If you are resonating with anything on this website, then you have reached a place in your evolution where you no longer need to be bound by the agreements of mass consciousness, and you can choose how and when to participate.
The catch is that it is not a mental choice. It is a choice that must be made by your whole being, including your mind, body, soul, and spirit, and that requires a depth of awareness and responsibility that few people are willing to accept.
You can think thoughts like “I choose to not be bound by gravity” as intensely and clearly as any human can, and you’ll still be firmly rooted to the earth. You can think “I choose to fly,” and if you jump off a tall building you’ll still die when your body crashes to the ground. There are those who, at times, have freed themselves from gravity’s pull, but only by making a choice at a level far deeper than that of the human mind.
But back to the so-called law of attraction, for most people on Earth are still choosing to participate in that agreement. Even here, the things that come to you are not, for the most part, attracted by your thoughts. You can think all the thoughts you want about that shiny new car you dream of, and visualize it till your head hurts, and at the end of the day you’ll still be driving your old clunker. Why? Because the law of attraction does not respond to your thoughts, and that is where this wonderful concept got turned into a sacred cow.
The law of attraction, as generally experienced on Earth, responds to who you are. It responds to the entirety of your being, and the thoughts you choose to think and the images you choose to visualize are a miniscule part of all that you are. That is why you still have a clunker in your driveway, or why you haven’t found the lover of your dreams or whatever else it is that’s missing from your life. (It is also why there are so many beautiful and wonderful things in your life at the same time, and it’s important to not lose sight of that.)
Many who teach the law of attraction don’t want to acknowledge that it responds to who you are instead of what you think, for it is much more appealing to play mental tricks on yourself than it is to actually look at who you are and take responsibility for that. Many people want a quick fix for the problems in their life, and they don’t want to do the work of actually becoming someone who naturally attracts the things they want.
Many people want to know what thoughts to think, or what images to visualize, in order to attract that grand and perfect lover who will sweep them off their feet and solve all their problems. But they’re really not interested in becoming a person who can return that favor, so all they attract are needy and dysfunctional people just like themselves.
The world around you is always a perfect reflection of all that you are on the inside, including every part of you that has ever existed and every part of you that you have ever been ashamed of or tried to disown. Those are the parts of you that are attracting the clunker in your driveway (or bed) and the chaos in your life, and you can’t get rid of them with mental tricks like positive thinking and visualization.
You might be able to distract or push away those aspects of yourself for a short time, but sooner or later they’ll come crashing back in with more energy than ever, and your outer world will mirror that to perfection. I’ve watched a number of people “attract” a new car or a new house into their lives and then not be able to make the payments, or a fantastic new lover and not be able to maintain a healthy relationship. The solution is very simple, but it requires a willingness to look deeper within yourself than you’ve ever looked before, and to absolutely accept and love everything that you find there.
The world around you is always a perfect reflection of the world inside you. If there is something in your life that you don’t want, it is because there is some part of you that you don’t want to accept and love. If there is something missing from your life that you want, it is only because there is some part of you that you’ve hidden away and have not allowed to come home.
It really is that simple, and all the positive thinking, visualization, and other popular techniques for creating your reality are nothing more than manipulation and mind-tricks. When you let all that go, and focus instead on absolutely and unconditionally loving every part of you, just the way it is, your life will change. Over time you’ll discover a sense of joy and fulfillment like you’ve never known before, and the world around you will change and reflect that back to you.
And that, my friends, is what the law of attraction is really about.
Another great piece, John. I have noticed that as I regard my life as being whole and complete rather than identifying with what I can pull in or push away, whether it be more money, love, or even enlightenment or less hassle, upset or problems in my life, the less the so-called “law of attraction/repulsion” keeps me trapped in the delusion that a focus on more/less is a path to being whole and complete.
Thank you John for your clear understanding of the Law of Attraction. I share the same perspective exactly, although I explain it in a perhaps a slightly different way in my latest book, pointing out that karma has to be taken into consideration by the creator (I know, karma doesn’t exist either but for the sake of teaching, I use the term). That is to say, all aspects we’ve created historically need to be loved and accepted before true creatorship can be experienced. Realizing this has helped me tremendously in letting go of frustration over still not seeing things show up that I’ve imagined for a long time.
I do want to add that Abraham also shares your perspective. I attended the Hicks seminar in Nov. ’09 in Atlanta, and have listened to the unedited cds at least 25 times and it is becoming clearer each time I do that Abraham is telling people they have to become that which they want to experience. As they put it, unconditional love is the only thing that will allow our world to look like what we say we truly want.
I think it is probably “The Secret” that has contributed to the current mass consciousness perspective on using thought to create. I’ve also heard Abraham criticize some of what Rhonda Byrnes shared in her book. So anyway, I truly appreciate your wisdom. Keep on offering it, for it is indeed having an affect on the mass consciousness.
